During Replenishment-At-Sea, the winch is used to pay out or haul in highline wire to keep the Ram
Tensioner centered,
making up for ship motion and holding tension on the highline. During Fueling-At-Sea, the winch is used
to pay out or
haul in spanwire to keep the spanwire tensioned during fuel transfer.
The winches used for highline and spanwire are practically identical, with only minor differences
related to use of
1-inch (highline) or 7/8-inch (spanwire) wire rope. The winch is designed and tested to withstand a
static load of twice
the rated load and to operate at low speed with a dynamic overload of 150% of the rated load. The winch
also has a
clutch that slips at 150% of the rated line tension to protect the winch and associated equipment from
severe load
spikes. The winch has a capacity for 900 feet of wire rope and is driven by a 120 HP electric motor,
with a rated line
tension of 19,500 pounds for highline and 15,500 pounds for spanwire, at a rated line speed of 240 feet
per minute.
